Shells

In OnField's Real Helmet Collectibles

Riddell builds a handful of platforms and every helmet we carry is one of them. The shell decides the silhouette on your shelf. Pick the era you collect, then the team.

The other question

Then pick a style

Shell is which generation of helmet. Style is how it is built and how big it sits on your shelf. They are separate choices: most clubs exist in all four.

Ninety-odd years of it

Why every helmet here says Riddell

John Tate Riddell was coaching high-school football in Illinois when he started the company in 1929. The helmets on this site are the direct descendants of what he built.

  2. 1939Riddell invents the plastic suspension helmet, replacing leather. Wartime shortages delay production.
  3. 1950sFacemasks arrive. The one-piece shell is perfected.
  4. 2002The Revolution, the first Riddell helmet designed specifically to reduce concussions.
  5. 2008Revolution Speed. Wider shell, better mask protection, the silhouette of the next decade.
  6. 2014SpeedFlex. Flex panel, hinged mask clip, built around impact sensing.
  7. 2022Axiom. Scanned fit, factory-built liner, InSite as standard.

Every helmet we sell is a collector display piece. None of them is protective equipment and none should be worn for play at any level.
